Sanhedrin (?), Sanhedrim (?), n. [Heb. sanhedrīn, fr. Gr. >; > with + > a seat, fr. > to sit. See Sit.] (Jewish Antiq.) the great council of the Jews, which consisted of seventy members, to whom the high priest was added. It had jurisdiction of religious matters.
