catatonia n. [Gr. κατατονος, stretching down, depressed, fr. κατά down + τόνος stretching, straining, tone (sound). Stedman.] (Psychiatry) an abnormal behavioral syndrome characterized by stupor, negativism, and muscular rigidity, sometimes alternating with purposeless excitement, and seen most frequently in schizophrenia; called also catatonic schizophrenia.
