    fax machine (făks'mȧ‑shēnˌ), n. [Shortened form of telefax, from tele- and facsimile.] A device which is designed to transmit and receive images by the facsimile2 process.  Such a device may also be able to perform other functions, such as scanning an image or copying an image; a telefax device.
