   off the hook (ŏfˌ thŭ ho͝okˈ), pred. adj.  No longer considered responsible; as, “Jack admitted breaking the vase, so Jill is off the hook”.  Used in various situations, with reference to responsibility to perform an action, or guilt for some misdeed.
