    Gymnotus , n. [NL., fr. Gr. γυμνός naked + νῶτος the back: cf. F. gymnote.] (Zool.) A genus of South American fresh-water fishes, including the Gymnotus electricus, or electric eel. It has a greenish, eel-like body, and is possessed of electric power.
