   Coyote , n. [Spanish Amer., fr. Mexican coyotl.] (Zool.) A carnivorous animal (Canis latrans), allied to the dog, found in the western part of North America; -- called also prairie wolf. Its voice is a snapping bark, followed by a prolonged, shrill howl.
